Warning Signs of a Reading Disability or Dyslexia

Preschool (Ages 3-5)

  • Delayed speech development compared to peers
  • Difficulty learning and remembering nursery rhymes
  • Trouble recognizing letters or their sounds
  • Struggles with rhyming words (e.g., cat, hat, bat)
  • Difficulty pronouncing longer words (e.g., saying “pasghetti” instead of “spaghetti”)
  • Trouble following multi-step instructions

Early Elementary (Ages 6-9)

  •  Difficulty learning letter names and sounds
  • Struggles with sounding out simple words
  • Frequent letter reversals (b/d, p/q) or number reversals (6/9) beyond age 7
  • Slow, choppy, or inaccurate reading
  • Avoids reading aloud or becomes anxious when asked to read
  • Poor spelling with frequent phonetic or inconsistent errors
  • Difficulty remembering sight words (e.g., the, said, was)
  • Trouble with sequencing (days of the week, alphabet, counting)

Late Elementary to Middle School (Ages 9-14)

  • Reads below grade level despite intelligence and effort
  • Difficulty understanding what was read (good oral comprehension but weak reading comprehension)
  • Slow and laborious reading; avoids reading whenever possible
  • Frequent spelling errors and trouble remembering spelling patterns
  • Struggles to express ideas in writing (e.g., poor sentence structure, difficulty organizing thoughts)
  • Difficulty learning a second language
  • Trouble with memorization (math facts, dates, lists)

High School and Adults

  • Poor reading fluency; slow reading speed
  • Trouble with written expression and organizing essays
  • Continues to have spelling difficulties
  • Struggles with note-taking or copying from the board
  • Avoids reading for pleasure; prefers audiobooks or verbal instruction
  • Difficulty with time management and organization
  • Trouble remembering directions, names, or sequences
